Introduction

Financial management reports provide us information to analyze business, planning and control, whilst also provide the basic understanding of Malaysian taxes structure and its relevancy.

Course Objectives

After completing this 2-day financial management course, participants should be able to achieve the following:

  • To explain the role and purpose of financial management and management of working capital
  • Obtaining knowledge on how to appraise capital and project investments via appropriate methods.
  • To enable participants understand the contents and prepare Business Plan, including Budgets/Forecasts
  • Understanding the Malaysian tax structures and computations of tax.

DAY 1

1. PRESENTATION AND UNDERSTANDING THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS (BALANCE SHEET, INCOME STATEMENT, CASH FLOW STATEMENT)

  • Balance Sheet – ‘where are we now’, what it represents
  • Income Statement – ‘where we have been’, knowing the operations
  • Cash-flow Statement – ‘where are we going’ (and forecasting)

2. BUSINESS CONTROLS AND RATIO ANALYSIS (TOOLS FOR ANALYSIS)

  • Business objectives and controls…objectives of control and the need for it
  • Profitability ratios
  • Liquidity ratios
  • Asset Usage ratios
  • Investors ratios

3. COST, VOLUME, PRICING AND PROFIT DECISIONS (CVP ANALYSIS)

  • Fixed and variable costs – understanding the cost structure
  • Break-even point analysis and margin of safety
  • Costings and standard costs – how do we formulate std costs and why?

4. BUSINESS PLAN – PREPARATION AND PRESENTATION

  • What is business plan and purpose of it; contents of Business Plan
  • Preparation of each section of a Business plan
  • Financial forecasting (part of Business plan)
  • Budgeting process and preparation of Master Budgets

DAY 2

5. INVESTMENT & PROJECT APPRAISAL AND RISK ANALYSIS (NPV, UNDERSTANDING THE TIME VALUE OF MONEY, IRR – INTERNAL RATE OF RETURN

  • Contrast fixed asset investment and working capital investment
  • Payback analysis, ROCE, compounding and discounting techniques; Time value of money consideration
  • Management of Working capital – creditors, debtors, inventory, cash management
  • Sources of financing & methods of securing

6. BASIC TAXATION – CORPORATE BUSINESS

  • Scope of income tax and basis of assessment
  • Residency
  • Income chargeable to income tax
  • Calculation of income tax liability
  • Dividend income and its franking
  • Overseas aspects

7. SELF ASSESSMENT SYSTEM – INCOME TAX

  • Payment of income tax liability
  • Forms CP204, CP206, CP207

8. REAL PROPERTY GAINS TAX

  • Principles and scope
  • Basis of calculation
  • Identification and application of relevant exemptions and reliefs
